Objective: To examine the morphological indicators of physique of 13-14-year-old swimmers with different sport specializations

Methods: A cohort study was conducted in which adolescent swimmers were divided into two groups based on their competitive performance: the sprint-oriented (SO, n=10) and the distance-oriented (DO, n=11) groups. The study analyzed the participants’ total, linear, and circumferential body measurements and composition

Results: It was found that SO swimmers had significantly higher body length, surface area, muscle mass, thigh length, foot length, as well as flexed arm, forearm, hip and thigh circumferences. In contrast, DO swimmers had greater relative body surface area and shin length

Conclusion: The findings suggest that SO swimmers possess larger total, linear, and circumferential body dimensions, potentially enabling them to generate greater propulsive and kicking force in water compared to DO swimmers. These results may be used to update model characteristics and criteria for sports orientation and selection of 13-14-year-old boys to be engaged in swimming

Keywords: Sport, talent selection, swimmers, sports physiology, sports morphology, anthropometry.
