Sociodemographic and ethnocultural aspects of suicide in the Republic of Tajikistan

The paper presents the data analysis of suicidal behavior among the population of Tajikistan. Over the study period (2005-2010) 659 suicide attempts among 264 men and 395 women was studied, of which 38,5% of cases were completed and 61,5% – uncompleted auto-aggressive action.

In the age groups 15-19 years, 20-24 years, 25-29 years, the number of women is much higher than the number of male suicides. The largest number of suicides occurred in the 15-19 age group (n=126) – 23 (18%) men and 103 (82%) of women and 20-24 years (n=161) – 53 (33%) men and 108 (67%) were women, which is due, above all, stay the men of this age in the labor migration.

Analysis of the relationship of suicide with a place of residence showed that the largest number of suicides (53,6%; n=353) performed by villagers. Higher education among men was in 20% of women – only 7%, indicating that the ethnocultural characteristics of suicides in Tajikistan - namely, the girls and women traditionally have fewer opportunities for education, including higher education.

The most common way of suicide is poisoning by medicines, vinegar essence (43%), followed by suicides hang himself (28%), the third – the self-immolation (22%).

Suicides among employment the highest percentage accountedthe housewives (42%), employers (19%), temporarily not working (18%), younger and older school age (10%).
