This report assesses the stages of establishing a system of epidemiological surveillance of HIV infection in the context of the development of the HIV epidemic in the Republic of Tajikistan.

The epidemiological situation of HIV/AIDS in Tajikistan gets worse every year, and further forecast remains extremely unfavorable, since there is now a growing level of cumulative infestation population of the Republic by HIV infection (2 cases – in 1991, 189 – in 2005, and up to 6558 people living with HIV – in 2014.), expansion of the geographical area of infection due to the coverage of the new administrative-territorial centers (64 of 68) and the activation of sexual transmission.

The structure of HIV transmission ways in Tajikistan, along with an intense increasing the numbers of HIV-infected people, mainly due to injecting drug users, there is a science-based increase in the proportion of sexual HIV transmission, which in 2009 amounted to 26,5%, in 2010 – 27,2%, in 2011 – 29,8%, in 2012 – 30,96%, in 2013 – 39,5%, in 2014 – 42,8%, i.e. during this period, the indicator rose by 1,6 times.

For integrated surveillance of HIV infection the principle importance have not only to detection cases of HIV infection, but also, of course, monitoring infestation and identify risk factors among the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and the general population.
